Why Choose a Portable Sawmill Service CT Company?

Bringing your logs to a traditional sawmill can be expensive and time-consuming. First, you have to load, secure, and transport your wood—then pay someone else to cut it—only to haul it all back again. When you hire Ridel, you avoid that entire process.

Instead, we bring our equipment to your property, set up quickly, and mill your logs right where they are. Not only does this save you money, it saves hours of heavy lifting and transportation headaches. Our clients appreciate how efficient and stress-free this approach is compared to sending lumber off to a commercial sawmill CT facility.

How To Prepare for a Portable Sawmill Service

Our high-production Wood-Mizer LT50WIDE isn’t your average mill, it’s a hydraulic powerhouse that makes quick, precise work of even oversized logs. The mill itself is 24 feet long, and when combined with the truck and trailer, we need about 50 feet of space to maneuver and set up properly

To get the most out of your milling day, it helps to prepare your logs and site ahead of time. A little planning makes the process faster, safer, and more productive. Here’s what we recommend before our sawmill arrives:

Preparing Your Logs

  • Cut to size. Have your trees cut into the log lengths you’ll want us to mill.
  • Decide on your lumber needs. Think ahead about board lengths and sizes for your project.
  • Seal the ends (optional). Applying a sealer like Anchorseal helps reduce end-checking while your boards dry.
  • Clean them up. Trim branches, stubs, and knots so the logs will roll easily onto the mill.
  • Stage them side by side. Place logs in a pile where we’ll have clear access with our truck and sawmill.

Setting Up The Milling Site

  • Choose level ground. The flatter the site, the faster and safer the setup will be. Aim for minimal slope; ideally less than a foot over the length of the mill.
  • Use slope to your advantage. If the ground tilts side to side, place logs on the uphill side so they naturally roll toward the mill.
  • Line them up lengthwise. Logs centered with the mill load faster and safer.
  • Leave enough room. We’ll need space for both the truck and mill to get in, set up, and move around.

Helpful Things to Think About

  • Your project goals. Whether you’re planning beams, boards, or slabs, knowing ahead of time ensures we cut to the right thickness and width.
  • Wood type. Consider whether the logs you’ve saved match the job you’re envisioning.
  • Handling help. Extra hands or a tractor/skid steer will make moving heavy boards easier.
  • Drying space. Plan where you’ll stack the lumber with spacers (stickers) for air drying.
  • Ask questions. Corey is always glad to share advice about stacking, drying, or best uses for different woods.

By taking these steps before we arrive, you’ll maximize efficiency, reduce downtime, and ensure your lumber comes out exactly how you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Wood-Mizer LT50WIDE Hydraulic Portable Sawmill is designed for oversized timber. We can handle logs up to 41 inches wide and 21 feet long, giving you flexibility to cut everything from beams to slabs for furniture. This capacity is larger than many standard mills, which means we’re able to take on the big jobs without issue.

The sawmill itself measures 24 feet, but when combined with our truck and trailer, we need about 45–50 feet of clearance to operate safely. Having an open, accessible area makes the process faster and ensures we can get in and out of your property without difficulty.

We use a hydraulic log lift that allows us to pick up even very heavy logs and place them safely onto the mill. This equipment ensures efficiency and reduces the risk of damage to the wood or injury from manual handling.

Most of the time, logs are staged in a pile before we arrive. Once on-site, we use a peavey tool to roll logs or work with any machinery the property owner may have available, such as tractors or skid steers. Organizing your logs in advance helps speed up the milling process.

The shortest log we can process is 5 feet long. This gives us enough length to safely secure and mill the log while still delivering usable lumber for smaller projects.

After milling, we recommend stacking your lumber with stickers—small 1”x1” wooden stakes—placed evenly between each layer. This allows air to circulate and prevents warping. We’ll neatly stack the lumber on-site so you’re set up for proper drying from day one.

Drying time depends on the type of wood. As a rule of thumb, hardwood typically takes one year per inch of thickness, while softwood can dry in 6–8 months. Proper stacking and air flow are key to ensuring lumber dries evenly and maintains quality.
